Autism can be expensive

After many years of use, I decided that my Summer jacket was now too shabby. Yesterday, I went shopping, looking for a light, informal jacket suitable for warmish weather. I tend to feel uncomfortable outside in just shirtsleeves, and where do you stow all the stuff you need to take with you? I buy clothes largely on feel, as one of my major sensory problems is texture and synthetic fibre textiles are unbearable to touch. There were some nice-looking lightweight jackets available, but they felt truly horrible to touch. This was repeated in a number of shops. Then I found a jacket that felt fine, nice colour, good fit, ideal. Of course it was 100% linen and three times the price of any of the others. I bought it, just thankful to have found something I could stand to wear. Autism can be expensive!

  • I agree. Finding clothes with a comfortable fit that are not synthetic often means paying more. I wear my favourite comfy clothes so much they wear out quickly. Then I have the hunt again to find something similar.

  • I know exactly what you mean. I’ve decided that on the rare occasion I find clothing that’s very comfortable and perfect for my senses, that I buy one and test it out a few times. Then if I still love it, I go back and buy several more in the exact same size, style & colour. I found some wonderful winter pyjamas last winter and ended up buying three pairs exactly the same… I wore them on repeat the whole winter! Grin

  • That is my hope, but sometimes on returning they have run out of my size. I do wish companies would keep the same fit for a while. It is the same with the cotton they used for trousers. My favourite supplier has stopped using the really soft cotton they used to use and some materials can feel scratchy. Being a 'classic' shape it would be good too if there was always something in that fit.
