What’s the hardest thing about your work environment?

For me it’s the noise of conversations around me in an open office - I find it really hard to tune out. And being interrupted frequently when I’m focusing on something.

Oh, and hot desking (which I thankfully don’t have to do anymore but made me so anxious every day for years).

I could go on…!

  • When I worked in the open plan office it was noise, smells and hot desking'. Now I mostly work from home it is sudden changes and new expectations.

  • Hot desking is terrible. I used to work somewhere that had a booking system, but hardly anyone used it properly, so even if you booked a desk there was always a good chance someone would be sitting at it when you arrived. And if you got there early to make sure you got your desk you were at the mercy of who sat next to you (I have a thing about germs, and found it super stressful when someone with a cough or cold would sit beside me, back in the days when turning up to work unwell was seen as heroic).

Working from home has revolutionised things! Constant emails and messages, meetings being moved and the ‘have you got 5 minutes for a chat’ requests are still a nightmare though.

  • Yes I used to try to arrive early to get preferred desk position, so only one person rather than two next to me. I agree with the fear of someone being 'heroic' and also fear of smell of a heavy smoker or strong perfume.

My nightmare with messaging includes those that open up over part of the screen, sometimes several in a row or a random phone call.
