My experience of having my user account suspended

I just wanted to share with everyone my recent experience of having my account suspended temporarily, to reassure others that if it happens to you it can be sorted out, and not to panic.

I received an email on Tuesday (7 Apr) stating "Your user account,  Lotus,  was flagged by other users as inappropriate and doesn't appear on the site right now!"  It had a link to a form for me to appeal by 17 Apr, or my account would be suspended.

When I went to the community website, my account had actually already been suspended - there was an orange banner advising that there was a problem with my account, and I was unable to log in.

I am suspicious of links in emails, so I forwarded the message to the community manager email address, asking why this had happened.

Yesterday I received a reply explaining that the email I was sent is system generated, when two or more users flag content as inappropriate (using the "flag to moderator" option ). However, it was looked into and the post flagged "was quite old and not harmful in any way" I was told that it had therefore been reinstated, and that everything should now be working as normal - which it is.

Just wanted to let everyone know, in case it happens to others.

  • Hi Lotus

Thanks so much for taking the time to post this as we know these messages can be worrying.

I've updated the Important information for new Online Community members pinned post in the Introduce Yourself topic to reiterate that posting a few times before we've had a chance to check the account and remove moderation may lead to these automated emails.

Just to clarify -  this email is sent automatically as part of our moderation system and not because other community members have raised concerns. The wording of the email is unfortunately misleading and we know it is alarming to receive. We’re not currently able to change that wording but we do always look into what’s happened as soon as we’re alerted.

If anyone receives a similar message and is unsure what it means, please don’t panic. You can email us at communitymanager@nas.org.uk and we’ll be happy to check your account and explain what’s happening.

Thank you for being part of the community and for helping reassure others.
