Eyeball Hyper-awareness

As a child, I used to experience periodic episodes where I suddenly became hyper-aware of my eyeball movements. Whilst it was not painful, it was uncomfortable and meant that I had stop tasks like reading, as all I could focus on was the feeling of my eyeballs. Now, at the grand old of age of 54, I am once again noticing that I am experiencing these hyper-awareness episodes. Is it just a me thing or is this a known autistic trait? Thanks.

  • I think in a general sense it could be, as a manifestation of variations in interoception. Interoception - the ability to feel things inside ones own body - tends to be low in autistics, but it can also be heightened. For myself, the closest I experience to your eyeball awareness is that I sometimes feel that I have forgotten how to swallow, that the command for 'swallow' has dropped out of my brain. Strange stuff!
