"small talk" at work

Anyone else struggle with what is acceptable to talk about at work? Like I would say something I thought was okay, only to be told later by my supervisor / manager it was inappropriate. Just wondering if anyone has tips of suitable topics / conversations which I can focus talking to colleagues about, so I don't talk about something inappropriate. Links to resources that list appropriate topics to speak about is highly appreciated Slight smile

  • I discovered decades ago, people love to talk about themselves. Therefore, if you become an avid listener, people will flock to you. The price is exhaustion but it keeps you out of trouble! Definitely never talk about politics or religion or even football. If you and your colleagues are in a profession, talk [or listen] about the latest research or discoveries in that field. Otherwise, what I used to do was keep my head down, use the library a lot and go for walks on breaks.
