"small talk" at work

Anyone else struggle with what is acceptable to talk about at work? Like I would say something I thought was okay, only to be told later by my supervisor / manager it was inappropriate. Just wondering if anyone has tips of suitable topics / conversations which I can focus talking to colleagues about, so I don't talk about something inappropriate. Links to resources that list appropriate topics to speak about is highly appreciated Slight smile

  • I'm not great with small talk, but I've noticed that people often ask each other about their travel.

E.g. 'have you had to come far to get here today?' Or, 'the roads were really busy/quiet this morning, how was your journey in?' Or, 'did you see the speed camera down the road this morning?'

The weekend, weather and holidays often seem pretty safe too, as others have mentioned on here already
