"small talk" at work

Anyone else struggle with what is acceptable to talk about at work? Like I would say something I thought was okay, only to be told later by my supervisor / manager it was inappropriate. Just wondering if anyone has tips of suitable topics / conversations which I can focus talking to colleagues about, so I don't talk about something inappropriate. Links to resources that list appropriate topics to speak about is highly appreciated Slight smile

  • What people did/are doing at the weekend.

Sometimes people will say 'not much' if they don't want to say anything, but occasionally they will say something interesting which they might enjoy talking about or let you ask more about (it should be safe as if they didn't want to talk about it they wouldn't have mentioned it).

This is often the way to get to know people more, but safely as it's up to them if they want to share their lives a bit more or not. If it's something they are going to do -like they are going to a concert or having dinner, the next week you can ask how it went. Sometimes people enjoy sharing an experience with you.
