Finally got my diagnosis!

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to share my news that I had my feedback session this morning and I've finally got the diagnosis I wanted. It's such a relief to have this part of the process over. One interesting thing my assessor told me was that it might be more helpful for me to talk to a Speech & Language Therapist at some point. He said a standard CBT Therapist works on the basis that they're trying to alter your way of thinking about irrational responses to stimuli, but my responses aren't irrational, at least not to me, and it can be damaging to have your experiences invalidated in that way. I thought that was really interesting and very insightful.

Anyway, I'm going to celebrate with a cream eclair and a cup of coffee!

And yes, CBT can be adapted for Autistic people IF (but only - big fat hariy IF) the issue actually does involve anxiety based irrational thought.  But in very many cases it's completely useless for us because whatever is causing the issue tends to be based on our very real sensory difference or very real social and communication differences, which aren't in the least bit irrational to start with.  Before I knew I was Autistic, I just found it was just trying to tell me my experience was not my experience - all very gaslighting!  Some other therapies are worse than that and can be outright harmful.  If you do want any therapy of any kind do insist that it is properly Autism informed and preferably administered by an Autistic person, then you might get somewhere.
