Hi I am new to this site

My son is 33 years old and never left home I have a feeling he might be autistic he’s been on anti depressants for 13 years and the GP says he’s suffering from chronic anxiety and depression. He never goes out has no friends and struggles in social situations he worries about the slightest thing and if people visit even family he hides away in his bedroom. For years I encouraged him to work which he couldn’t handle get his driving test which took him longer and went to college to get his level 2 fitness instructor’s course working out in the shed that’s his passion he has nothing else but couldnt cope with college and they allowed him to complete it from home I feel bad if he has had autism because I’m sure I wouldn’t of encouraged him to do all these things was totally ignorant to autism in your opinion does he sound like he is suffering from autism? Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi and welcome to the community!

has already shared some great NAS links.

For example, the "Before diagnosis" section includes an article "Signs that a child or adult may be autistic". This lists over 60 signs, and can be useful as a reference when noting down signs that you and/or your son recognise in him. Along with a completed screening questionnaire, the resulting list can then be shared with your son's GP if he wants to request a referral.

The NAS articles include links to screening questionnaires, which can also initially help in giving a better idea of whether your suspicions might be correct. However, you might prefer to use the website below for this.

It also includes a helpful commentary for each questionnaire, and enables them to be completed online (with scores calculated for you), saved as PDFs and - if the results support your suspicions and you decide to seek a formal diagnosis - printed off or saved as electronic copies for sharing later.

The AQ-10 or AQ-50 seem to be the most frequently used / required by GPs in support of NHS referrals. (RAADS-R might also be helpful, although some recent research has thrown doubt on its validity as a screening tool):
