Hi I am new to this site

My son is 33 years old and never left home I have a feeling he might be autistic he’s been on anti depressants for 13 years and the GP says he’s suffering from chronic anxiety and depression. He never goes out has no friends and struggles in social situations he worries about the slightest thing and if people visit even family he hides away in his bedroom. For years I encouraged him to work which he couldn’t handle get his driving test which took him longer and went to college to get his level 2 fitness instructor’s course working out in the shed that’s his passion he has nothing else but couldnt cope with college and they allowed him to complete it from home I feel bad if he has had autism because I’m sure I wouldn’t of encouraged him to do all these things was totally ignorant to autism in your opinion does he sound like he is suffering from autism? Any help would be appreciated.

  • Just a little note in case you and your son do decide to explore an autism diagnosis - don't think of autism as something he's 'suffering from'. For sure there are lots of hurdles and challenges to overcome because the world wasn't designed for neuro-divergent people but I think its a good idea to move away from thinking of autism as a criticism or negative part of him. If he is autistic, it isn't that there's something wrong with him, he just has a different way of thinking.
