Hi I am new to this site

My son is 33 years old and never left home I have a feeling he might be autistic he’s been on anti depressants for 13 years and the GP says he’s suffering from chronic anxiety and depression. He never goes out has no friends and struggles in social situations he worries about the slightest thing and if people visit even family he hides away in his bedroom. For years I encouraged him to work which he couldn’t handle get his driving test which took him longer and went to college to get his level 2 fitness instructor’s course working out in the shed that’s his passion he has nothing else but couldnt cope with college and they allowed him to complete it from home I feel bad if he has had autism because I’m sure I wouldn’t of encouraged him to do all these things was totally ignorant to autism in your opinion does he sound like he is suffering from autism? Any help would be appreciated.

  • It's good to research it, but also good to take time to process the information- not all at once. Things may be tricky, because across many disorders similar symptoms occur, but the underlying causes are different.  Many people have commorbid disorders for example autism, anxiety, depression are very common together. I think your son is in a situation,  where an evaluation by professional could be very helpful for him he could maybe also receive support in getting independent once his needs get recognised.
