Participants For Qualitative Study
Who the researchers are
We are Sascha Barnard and Amy Brennand. We are two Trainee Clinical Psychologists studying at University College London. For our research project we want to speak to autistic adults about their experiences of restraint in childhood or adolescence, and how this may be continuing to impact them now as an adult. By exploring this we want to highlight restraint experiences faced by autistic individuals and further develop how the impacts of these are understood and we hope that this can inform approaches towards change.
We are looking for people who:
-
Are adults aged between 18-29
-
Have an autism diagnosis or self-identify as autistic
-
Experienced restraint as a child or teenager (under the age of 18) - restraint can mean many things such as physical restraint, chemical restraint, or mechanical restraint or you might also have your own examples of restraint that are different to this
-
Would be willing to talk about these experiences in an interview with one of us (Sascha or Amy).
Reimbursement details
£20 Love2Shop voucher on completion of interview.

Autistic advisory group
We are looking for people who:
- Are aged between 18-29
- Self-identify as or have been diagnosed as autistic
- Have experienced trauma and/or restraint during childhood and adolescence (before the age of 18)
- Are willing to be consulted on various aspects of the study until approximately Summer 2026 (it is okay if you’re only available for some of this time).
What is involved?
The expert by experience panel is a group of 4-5 adults aged 18-29 who identify as or are diagnosed as autistic. They will have personal experience of trauma and/or restraint and be asked to give the researchers feedback at different stages of the project. For example, giving feedback about materials used to recruit people to the project, or to share your ideas about how to share the project’s findings with different groups.
Reimbursement details
Each member of the advisory group will receive a Love2Shop voucher of £25 per time for their contribution. We estimate each person will be asked to contribute 1-2 times, for up to 1 hour each.
