Poem about being an employed autistic adult

Hi! Just wanted to share this poem I’ve written about my struggles with working. I know not everyone will relate to it, but I hope you enjoy!

Title: “Superpower”

You call it a gift, a “superpower”

The thing that makes blood boil and nerves cower

Curled in my mind, hidden sunflower

You can’t see it but want it pretty

You ask do I have support for the aches

As I lay limply tied to the stake

“Are we holding you up, for goodness sake?”

You can’t see it but want it placated

You tell me “be proud, you’re doing so well!”

To get me to work as though you could compel

My disability just to stand up and be swell

You can’t see it but want it productive

And now you say “but you were doing fine!”

You wish to categorise struggles of mine

It never was yours, do decline to define

You can’t see it, I want it protected

  • I really like this poem  . My manager is currently asking me to define my struggles...he has had meetings with DASS and Occupational Health to understand how I am. They have gone into detail with him but he wants more. If I tell him I am struggling he either ignores me or tells me to 'do my job'. He makes me feel like I am a hild trying to get out of school.
