New diagnosis

  1. Just been diagnosed... What now?
  • Congratulations on your diagnosis ! I phoned my local autism centre in my county. I signed up for their newsletter and they offered me a free call next week to discuss next steps. My dad calls it a 'relaunch'. I'm not sure if that's a compliment or a backhanded one? Good luck with whatever you decide to do. Sometimes not knowing isn't all bad. All the best!

  • Life :-)

maybe a period of reframing how one considers oneself and re-assessing - others have given great advice here on that topic :-)

If there are mental health issues that have come about because one was not diagnosed and the reasonable adjustments that you and others would otherwise have applied were not then maybe some work on that?

I figure that it depends somewhat on identifying what one needs, wants and is capable of doing?

    Best wishes :-)

  • What now? We work together towards changing the laws. Global equality for the neurodivergent. About time.

  • Thank you so much I got like some information from the therapist who diagnosed me so been reading that and on some websites he supplied but I'll look into a book also and on here thank you yeah feels good to have the diagnosis and to like understand why I am the way I am

  • Hi and welcome to the community.

Read posts, join in by adding comments, ask questions.

I hope you find the forum useful.

  • Hi

Yeah that's the tricky bit, you get your answer but it can be a bit difficult knowing what to do after, especially if you've been waiting a long time and not much/any help offered after.

What now? It kind of depends on where your head is at, whether you need to unpack with someone (like therapist), or if you just want to reach out to others like you (like on this forum) or anything else, like trying to find out about groups (I think there is a directory on the NAS website). It's good to read books and find out about how to tell people (good to not rush straight in, sometimes responses can be disappointing), or about the process of unmasking. (Complex!)

People on here are generally helpful, just ask!

And congrats on the diagnosis I hope!
