Noise Cancelling Headphones

Got myself a pair of these and trying them out for the first time (just in my flat). No noise from the outside world, no rattling of radiators or boilers ticking over. Have a strangely calm sensation in my head which is hard to describe.

Only uncovered what I strongly believe to be autism just over a week ago with my therapist, but I’m collecting more and more data every day that supports the discovery. Completely blindsided me if I’m honest but my response has been mostly positive so far.

There is definitely a little bit of grief behind it, but for the first time in my life the noise in my head and the tension in my body has been turned right down. I said to my therapist yesterday it’s like someone has handed me the instruction manual to my brain. Still lots of stuff to figure out but it’s a huge relief to finally have some answers after all these years.

Anyway, excuse my little tangent. The noise cancelling headphones are a good purchase it seems!

  • I have worn my noise cancelling headphones a few times without music on. It doesn't remove noise completely but reduces it a lot and nobody can tell. Tbh it was more that I put them on, then got distracted and forgot to start my music Joy

  • Mine have a feature where you can place your hand on the ear cup and it will temporarily turn off the noise cancellation and I think it even routes some of the sound from the microphones into the headset. Due to the way the noise cancellation works, having them on can make environmental noise clearer.

On road safety, it is worth noting that electric cars and bikes even with the noise makers can be very difficult to hear with or without headphones, and can start moving without warning (the noise makers only sound while moving, and there is no engine noise to indicate "this vehicle may move at any point").

You are right though, there are definitely times when they should not be used.

  • OK, now I understand better. Hope you can find a way forward with those.

  • Other people use headphones for listening to music. I, however, referred to headphones designed for sound insulation rather than for music. These headphones look unusual because of their design. A regular music headset, on the other hand, is not sufficient to reduce stimuli.
