Noise Cancelling Headphones

Got myself a pair of these and trying them out for the first time (just in my flat). No noise from the outside world, no rattling of radiators or boilers ticking over. Have a strangely calm sensation in my head which is hard to describe.

Only uncovered what I strongly believe to be autism just over a week ago with my therapist, but I’m collecting more and more data every day that supports the discovery. Completely blindsided me if I’m honest but my response has been mostly positive so far.

There is definitely a little bit of grief behind it, but for the first time in my life the noise in my head and the tension in my body has been turned right down. I said to my therapist yesterday it’s like someone has handed me the instruction manual to my brain. Still lots of stuff to figure out but it’s a huge relief to finally have some answers after all these years.

Anyway, excuse my little tangent. The noise cancelling headphones are a good purchase it seems!

  • What sort have you got? I'm wary of them as I've been told they don't stop the sound of the human voice and it's that I don't want to listen too, espcially the screaming child over the hedge. I have cPTSD too and I don't want to end up with an increase in hypervigilance..

But good for you, finding something that works for you and engaging with your diagnosis rather than waiting for someone else to make thing better.

  • I got Bose Quiet Comfort SCs. Not the cheapest but I had some gift vouchers to put towards them. I would say if the voices you want to block out are outside they will be very effective. I live next to a school and couldn’t hear a thing from outside.

As for inside, they blocked out all low level environmental noise completely (the boiler/radiators etc. Everything else was very dampened/muffled. I was making some food and a cup of tea and the noise of the spoons, bowls etc I could still hear but very much dampened down which really took the edge off it.

Not sure about indoor voices but again, likely dampens them down very much. You can also adjust the level of noise cancellation to your liking if you still want to maintain a level of awareness of your surroundings.
