Support and Employment

Hello everyone,

I'm new here, and just recently got my Lvl 1 ASD diagnosis at 47 (which is obviously a whole thing). I was wondering if anyone knew of any support/resources for people with ASD in terms of getting into employment, general support etc.

I'm in therapy and have asked my GP about additional options for that, but I'm not really sure where else to look - or if there even is any additional support for people with high functioning. I'm not expecting much to be honest, but wanted to check all the same.

Thanks!

  • Hey profdanger, appreciate it, thanks. I'll drop you a DM at some point, and yeah maybe we have similar here, not too sure. I am actually retraining at the moment, but the problem is finding something in the interim ha!

  • There is another way I have just remembered and it is through the job centre. An autist I know has had them involved. So you could always go down that route depending on the job type you are after.

  • Good morning from America, Symthetic!

So I know here in the States we’ve got a system for helping people with disabilities such as Autism find employment (that’s actually my job, I’m an employment specialist), but I’m not sure if the UK has a similar system. We’re also called job coaches. Basically my job is to help with discovering what you want to do for employment, assist with finding a job, then help to retain a job until total independence is achieved. I imagine something like that would be awesome in your case.

If you’ve got any questions about the job hunting process, I might have some advice, but of course I’m a little limited since things are different over here than over there.

  • Hey Mr T, thanks.

I wasn't aware of support groups, but will look into it. And yeah, I wasn't expecting much to be honest. I suppose it's basically more of the same then in terms of finding and staying in work, with the added bonus/penalty of disclosing I have ASD, depending on the employer :D

  • Hello Symthetic,

Thanks for posting on this forum. You will find information to help autistic people find a job and get the support they need at work on this link:

  • Welcome to the 'Latelings' club. There may be support groups in your area that you could ask. I certainly had a 6-8 week 'late diagnosed' group, which discussed various topics about what ASD may mean for you. Other than that I have found very little support. The NAS has loads of pages of generic support but they are limited in detail.

There are lots of books that you can read to do your own research. I am afraid that is about all you can do.

I have found this forum to be a place of safety to discuss how autism affects each other. There is a wealth of knowledge so feel free to ask questions. Remember there is no stupid questions to ask but only stupid answers.

    best of luck
