Taking shoes off to eat

This is a random one but for my whole life I’ve had to remove my shoes before I can eat at home, even the thought of having them on makes me feel weird. I’m perfectly fine when I’m in a restaurant but at home I can’t bear it. Is this an autism thing or just a me thing? I’m on about 6 months into my diagnosis so I’m discovering new things daily that I haven’t realised were “a thing”.

Does anyone else have this or similar?

  • I don't think specifically taking your shoes off is, but the need behind it sounds like it. If you have a routine or rule and you don't follow it, it can be difficult for you!

It would be interesting if others have that one. I find it interesting to work out why I start rules, but harmless ones like that aren't a bother. I wonder if you were told to take your shoes off when you were little and it stuck?

  • I have no idea where it came from and I’m pretty sure that none of my siblings do it. Odd rituals are quite amusing I find, obviously not the ones that cause discomfort, but ones that once you recognise are not the norm so to speak are fascinating
