What would you do if you won the lottery?

I've just read a novel where the central character wins the lottery, and it got me thinking about what I'd do in that situation. I wouldn't want anything "flashy" like an expensive car, rolex watch or jewellery, or a mansion size home. The only thing I'd want is a small home in a quiet area that's detached, to prevent noise issues. I don't really care where, but I'd like it to have a few useful shops and a post office nearby and for Sainsbury's to be able to deliver my groceries, and fairly near the sea would be nice too. Only problem is that I don't actually play the lottery, so it really is a dream!

What would you do if you suddenly had a couple of million?

  • I would be able to do the work I've always dreamt of doing.

The irony is work and money have been infinitely difficult for me my entire life, but i have always had huge aspirations.

Being surrounded in tech for most of my life, my goals with a lottery win are as follows

    For me

    - A house, security and support as required, offering stability that seems impossible to acquire without financial wealth.

    For the community

    - An app which supports people who live with things such as Autism, ADHD and Complex-PTSD etc, for Adults. The aim being to leverage skills and desired of these individuals, to help them to develop and grow as they need and want to, while giving them meaning and an income, leading to increased likelihood of stability.

I feel as an Adult with Autism, ADHD & C-PTSD, and no family, there's so little support, particularly when you know you need support but are unable to articulate it.

While possessing skills which others when they do are incredibly successful in life, only to watch others continue to "level up" as I see the time go by without the achievements others consider to be progress in life, is so tremendously difficult.

The idea of this app came to me in recent years since really struggling to find support and stability, but recognising the over 10,000 hours of experience in tech i have invested, yields no financial return, now leading me to struggle to engage in anything tech at all.

I identified that "i am missing something that neurotypical people have on top of the technical skillset" that i am unable to figure out, and cannot seem to outsource. Perhaps an app which fills the gaps would provide many others like me, and including me an ability to leverage what they "can do" alongside a bespoke support system for what they "have yet to refine" in order to bring them into alignment with their goals and desires of work, security & stability.

It's a weird feeling, because those who i speak with and listen to would do less with a lottery win, and yet i would be able to do so much more, it would provide me the ability to help myself and others, to a degree which isn't yet available.

Without wealth or ability to effectively acquire it, it feels as if i do so much, but i would do so much more due to opportunities that arise from having one of the most difficult things to acquire, financial wealth.

    TLDR

    A house, and

An app that outsources the things that help people with leveraging their existing skills to exist with stability, while supporting the development and refinement of they need.

  • I'd buy and fit out a camper van and disappear with my dog for long periods of time.

I'd more generally stop engaging with the people and things that drain me but that im financially reliant on.

  • If I won the lottery, I probably wouldn’t tell anyone… But there would be signs…

  • Thank you for reminding me about the prequels.

I haven't seen them yet, and had intended to watch them following a short break after Yellowstone. But then completely forgot (as I also do with so many other things)!

  • I would definitely be excited to win it! I would share some with a couple of very good friends, and I would give some to charity, specifically a local autism charity, a local animal charity, and a national charity for all things nature. For myself I would buy one luxury thing and the put the rest in the bank for when I really might need it.

  • Wow, you'd be celebrating in style then!

I dont't do the lottery either, maybe once or twice a year, I did it for 6 months and barely won my stake money back, but my DiL does it regularly, keeps track of it of all and is well ahead with her winnings.

  • Yeah I've just started to watch Yellowstone and yes I'm enjoying it.

I've also watched 1883 and 1923, both are really good.

    Racehorse

  • I don't do the lottery either, but if I could afford it I would retire now.

  • Very wise re electric car. Way too much technology, alerts about everything and it doesn't come with a manual.

  • I just need a house thats suitable and good health and peace. Its not money its health and space and quietness. Fields and nature and organic natural and space. Away from people and cities and noise and conflict. Greenary and plants and space. Fresh air. Brightness. Positive. Away from society and people. Not flashy cars or mansions. Nature flowers plants fresh air positive brightness organic colourfull green fields long visual space. Water small tiny birds. Clean spaces.

  • Obviously set my kids up with nice homes and move house myself, I'd probably buy a newer car, but probably not an electric one as I don't think I could cope with all the tech in it.

If I won a euro millions rollover or something daft then I think I'd become a social landlord and let houses out at rents people can afford with long term leases so they have a sense of security.

  • I also loved your retreat idea on the mountaintop over the rainforest. What a wonderful setting for a place of relaxing and learning.

  • Oooo I like that idea! Sounds like a perfect dream and a lake with a little log cabin in the centre

  • Apart from the obvious of looking after family (I don't need anything myself)...

I always loved the idea of getting some land and rewilding into a nature reserve. I'd hire someone to run it, as I know I don't have the energy, but then I could have a hide with comfy seats and just sit there watching the wildlife.

  • I'd buy a ranch in Montana.

Have you watched Yellowstone? I really enjoyed it. Horse Ox

  • Mmm...I don't do the lottery and wouldn't consider myself to be materialistic.

So...I think if I could buy a simple remote life..that would be good.

I'd buy a ranch in Montana.

    I love horses .
