New Year's resolution backfire

My new years resolution is to stop masking and just say what i'm thinking and feeling - well it's been one day and after trying to navigate a conversation that i was avoiding about mould in the bathroom i've landed myself in the midst of a backlash about how i'm trying to cause trouble and that i'm selfish etc etc....... no wonder we mask, i think not doing it is safer! Anyone relate?

  • I feel you on this one. Ever since my diagnosis I have wanted to unmask more. I think with my unmasking goals at first I was being unrealistic and putting too much pressure on myself which you may relate to. Basically after every social interaction where I was feeling awkward or like I was masking I would make a commit that tomorrow would be the day I unmask and be my true authentic autistic self.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t as easy as that as you could imagine. Then because I failed these unrealistic goals I would be really hard on myself and it just wasn’t a productive way of going about things. At the moment I’m trying to have more compassion for myself and set realistic goals.

Unmasking is so hard like you have been conditioning yourself to act a certain way for years so it will take time for you to figure how to unmask and what not.
