Favourite Tea, Coffee or Hot Chocolate.

I’ve got a new found love for decent  tea, coffee and hot chocolate, what’s your favourites? I’ve found a Clipper brand of hot chocolate that I love and a Fair Trade Colombian coffee that’s strong in flavour, I seem to enjoy intense flavours. Went to  a small independent cafe yesterday that still uses loose leaf tea, it was very enjoyable and felt correct, the cafe was also quiet and not a free space for computer users.

What’s your favourite brew?

  • Do Ghazal Super Ceylon Earl Grey (Sri Lankan tea, available as tea bags, or loose tea).   (I am happy to drink this black, without sugar).

Ahmad Tea English Breakfast Black Tea (a blend of Indian Assam tea with brisk Ceylon - Sri Lankan tea and bright Kenyan tea, available as tea bags, or loose tea). (I am happy to drink this black, without sugar).

Whittard of Chelsea Jasmine Dragon Pearls Loose Tea (Fujian Province in China Green Tea). (I am happy to drink this black, without sugar).

Kenco Millicano Americano Instant Coffee.  (I am happy to drink this either black, or with some semi-skimmed milk, without sugar).

Lidl Bellarom Gold Blend Ground Coffee (109% Arabica coffee, finely ground, strength 4 out of 5). (I am happy to drink this either black, or with some semi-skimmed milk, without sugar).

I find most Hot Chocolate products far too sweet for my preference.  My choice is to instead make Cocoa.  In a standard mug; I put a scant level teaspoon of sugar and a generous heaped teaspoon of Cadbury Bournville Cocoa powder.  Mix together well the sugar and cocoa.  Then add only just to the boil hot water (leaving some room in the mug for some milk).  Stir well together the sugar / cocoa / water mixture and top up with a bit of whole milk.

If camping / hiking / travelling; the Cocoa can be made safely portable by making up a dry mixture (stored in either a Nalgene HDPE wide-necked bottle, or a plastic clip-lock food storage box, or a thermal insulated travel mug with lid) of; sugar / cocoa and substitute a couple of generous heaped teaspoons of Nestlé Nido Dry whole milk powder instead of the liquid whole milk.  Carry boiled water in a stainless steel thermos flask.  Mix together your cocoa / sugar / milk powder / boiling water when ready to serve when out and about.

A local fish and chip shop owned and run by a couple of generations of a family serves a particularly nice tea bag cup of tea.  (I must remember to ask them if they wouldn't mind telling me which tea brand they use next time I am there).  You sit down at an always freshly well cleaned tables, they bring a standard white ceramic builders' style mug of piping hot tea (with the tea bag still left in the mug of hot water, a stainless steel teaspoon, a stainless steel bowl ready for your spent tea bag and teaspoon, plus a small stainless steel jug of whole milk - thereby ensuring each customer can steep / mash and serve their tea exactly how they prefer).  When you order your mug of tea; they also ask if you would like any sugar - so that option is available to customers' taste too.  When you have been busy; out doing errands / shopping / attending appointments etc. it is very civilised to be able to take a seat and relax over your mug of tea - all for £2.  There is no music / TV blaring away - just the convivial chatter of customers enjoying their drinks / meals, the quiet hubbub of the fish and chips being cooked, punctuated by the friendly staff greeting regular customers by their first name.  It is never too hot and humid, nor too cold and draughty in their shop.  When you want customers to be cosy in Winter it is warm without being too hot.  In summer there is air conditioning if necessary and an outside table and chairs area if people prefer.  All the staff are super-diligent about ensuring the exterior doors are kept shut (which maintains the required temperature and ensures no draught / insects bother customers).  A truly, reliable, oasis in a small bustling market town.  The fish and chips are great too if you have a chance to pause for a meal.  I like that you can also get a particularly early lunch if that suits your plans for the day (always served really promptly by their pleasant team).  Consequently, the shop is popular across the generations of customers.  Also, the chairs are the type fixed to the tables - so there is never any chair leg movement noise / scraping across the floor, or clattering into the furniture and people from neighbouring tables cannot use their seat to invade your space.  Plus, the seats are the plain bent plywood type (no scratchy fabric upholstery).  This isn't just a mug of tea, this is an uncommonly Neurodivergent-friendly, out in the town, mug of tea!

You rarely get this attention to detail which is fantastic, because eating or drinking out is generally expensive and therefore a real treat. I think a lot of cafes don't do enough to please customers like this. Your cafe certainly deserves an award.
