Memory

As I've aged (I am now over 60) my older memories have become much more intense and I'm remembering things I'd previously forgotten.

In fact, I feel haunted by my past and often can't stop thinking about it, especially my childhood.

I've read in the past about memory in autism being different and I'm unsure whether it's to do with this or whether this is a usual thing as people age.

I've talked to people older than me and they often talk about the past but I don't know whether this is because of mental decline, and short term memory failing.

Does anyone else experience what I have described above.

Any ideas what it might be related to?

Thanks.

  • I am in my 60s and I have felt haunted by my childhood and adolescence for most of my life, but since my ASD diagnosis, I have been able to let go of the things that I felt were solely my fault. Other things in my past loom large but perhaps they have a lesser impact on me now than they did twenty years ago, yet I will never forget them and they can occasionally cause real distress.

i have noticed that the things that continue to cause occasional distress occur when I am feeling low, stressed or when someone says something horrible to me. I haven’t noticed my short term memory declining much and the things I do forget tend to be things I disregard anyway.

  • Thank you for sharing this.

I have a very good and vivid memory for quite a lot of my childhood and adolescence and similar to you I have been haunted by memories all my life.

What I am perplexed by is how this is increasing with time.

    It's quite curious.

  • I don’t think my memories are increasing like yours, but I sometimes wonder if I am remembering certain aspects of my memories correctly as occasionally something else about the childhood event occurs to me. It hasn’t happened enough for me to consider a reason.

i don’t know why your recollection of the past is increasing.

  • Sorry, ignore what I said in the previous post.

I meant that thirty years ago I could have been remembering another detail from a recurrent childhood memory. I don’t know if I did or didn’t.

  • Interesting

Yes it is. I just don’t know if these other things that come into my memory are more recent occurrences or if these things also happened 30 years ago.
