Just diagnosed at 45

Hi all.

I have just been diagnosed at 45 as having ASD.

I have suspected as much for a while so its not a shock but unsure what to do with this new found info!!

I mean i havent changed, ive always been this way so how does this help me and my family going forward?

Hope that makes sense?

Any help and guidance would be much appreciated.

  • Hello   Welcome to the community.

Your question makes perfect sense, but I can only tell you what helped me to move forward following diagnosis nearly a year ago in my 60s.

Firstly, diagnosis was a positive thing for me as it explained why I had difficulties with some things, and it removed self-blame for the things that led to criticism from others.

Secondly, it gave me ‘permission’ (I would not have trusted myself to self-diagnose, although others here do) to educate myself on ASD through engaging with posts and this NAS website, and reading books and research papers on ASD. This helped me move forward, although the journey wasn’t a steady one, and there were some ups and downs.

Everybody is different and for some a diagnosis might help in their employment. In the UK, official diagnosis is not needed for people to seek reasonable adjustments.

    Best wishes moving forward.
