Unsettling article on how the US experimented with "problematic" children

Neurodivergent children often go through a lot of behavioral issues dueing their teen years - you only need to look at some of the posts on here for proof of this.

I read an interesting article today about how the US experimented on behavioral modification techniques that were quite shocking, not least because they have been trying hard not to disclose the information to those who are still suffering the consequences of it.

With ODD (oppositional defiant disorder) and RSD (rejection sensitivity dysphoria) being common causes of behavioral issues in teenagers plus all the ususal autistic socialisation and behavioral issues, I rather suspect the neirodivergent population would be prime candidates for such treatents.

What concerns me in general about this is that the US (and to a degree many other western countries) seem to be regressing to the culture that was common back then and the rights of people such as us are looking like they will be eroded (courtesy of RFJ Jr and Trump) so seeing such programs re-instated is not really much of a stretch of the imagination.

I don't think the UK is exactly squeeky clean in its treatment of those with behavioral issues - does anyone have knowledge of the UKs treatment of the "behaviorally challenged" groups in the past?

  • You just need to look at the dark history of children's homes (up to present day) to see what abuses are inflicted on 'difficult' children in general.

    I know the US was into eugenics in a big way well into the 1950's and probably 60's too.

    You had our government, along with others using the army to test out the effects of radiation on there are still hundreds who were exposed to radiation and chemical weapons without thier knowlege or consent, who are compaigning for justice and compnesation, many have had more than one cancer and some unusual ones too, their wives suffered too and many have had children with birth defects.

    My parents told me that when I was born they were glad I was OK as obviously disabled children wre often taken away and the parents told to forget about them, the children were brought up in "hospitals".

  • I red once an article about terribly abusive "therapies" that autistic children in my country were put on. It was some novelty from Norway and parents were promised, this therapy would help their children. Instead it traumatised them deeply for whole life. I won't cite here, what has been done to these children, but i was shocked. In this perspective I can say, I'm lucky that I was never diagnosed and saved from such an abuse, although I suffered and was abused other ways. These people are more or less my age.
