Poppies and rememberance

Do you wear a poppy and go to rememberance services?

I feel really ambivalent about them and it. I wish there was more focus on those who came/come back brokens. I say this as the Grandaughter of one of the "lions led by donkey's", my Grandda suffered from what we now know as PTSD, he sacrificed his sanity and the legacy still runs through our family to this day. Why do we not remember the sacrifice people like him made?

  • I am similarly ambivalent. I find it all very performative, everyone pretending to think deeply about the horrors of war for an hour or so and then going back to their lives. It doesn't really seem to address the utter futility of all wars and, as you say, the traumatic effects on those who survived a war they were forced to fight, whether they wanted to or not, not to mention the huge numbers of civilians who lose their lives in conflicts every day. It's all a bit militaristic for my taste, and as someone with very strong anti-monarchy views, the involvement of the royal family with the main remembrance service also puts me off.
