Study: Understanding autistic emerging adults’ experience of online social comparisons

Note: This account only posts external research that has been approved by the NAS research team.

Euan MacLennan is a trainee clinical psychologist completing his doctoral research at University College London. He has several years of experiencing working with autistic people across schools, primary care settings, and inpatient hospital settings. He is interested in improving our understanding of social media and the role that it plays in our lives - particularly its effects on mental health and wellbeing. This research project is looking at autistic emerging adults' experiences of social media; in particular we are trying to understand their experiences of engaging in 'social comparison' in the online world.  The study involves a brief online questionnaire, and an hour-long in-depth interview.
We are looking for adults aged 18-29 years who:
  • Have a formal diagnosis of autism OR self-identify as autistic
  • Use social media daily (on average)
  • Live in UK
  • Can understand and respond to written/verbal information in English
Participants who complete an interview will be reimbursed with a £20 shopping voucher, sent via email.
