Telling your child they are autistic

Hello. Just wanted ask a question about letting a child know their condition. I wanted ask an older person if it's a good idea to let your child know they are autistic, or waiting until they are older.

When my step son was diagnosed the specialist told us to wait and he will figure it out for himself, but I was thinking would it be better to tell him so he's not confused about himself. When it comes to reading for example he really struggles where as his much younger cousin age 4 can already read better than him. And he tries his best but gets stuck on 3 letter words still.

So can anyone tell me if it's a good idea to tell him or wait until he figures it out?

Thanks very much

  • Hey there Shaun,

We did a little of both for my daughter when she was around… 5 or 6? I was diagnosed first, so we made her aware of what Autism is and how it affects me. Then we introduced her to other Autistic people and characters (like Bruno from Thomas & Friends All Engines Go). She put two and two together and figured it out, but we also confirmed with her that she did get diagnosed with it around age 4.

So I guess I’m saying letting your child figure it out could be a good option, but you can certainly help him along the way to understand what Autism is.
