Recognising burnout symptoms in oneself and management strategies for late diagnosed aitism

Happily I see resources in the NAS that give tools for recognising and managing/preventing burnout and it is an increasing topic in a variety of media.

I have come across "spoon" counting.  Also "energy accounting" as means of exploring this.  The NAS have videos of young people on the latter.

Getting going again safely after burnout when late diagnosed is a bit of an "elephant in the room" going on my experience and other posts I've read.

I'm an "old dog" who is able to learn new tricks - just seems to take me longer.

So, please,

Any older/late diagnosed autistic people out there with experience to share on this topic please?

  • This is something I am working on. I have two scenarios which cause difficulties.

One is caused by pressures of work and other things around me. I am working on trying to plan life with enough breaks to help me cope and get to the next period of leave from work.

The other is not so easy as it is due to less predictable things including caring needs.

I have tried to plan my work leave around the above as much as possible and have tried to gauge when taking a short period off before I crash will reduce the necessary time off at a later date.

There have also been elements of things in our work contracts that can help recover or make adjustments, but this would depend on what is available at your place of employment.

I have to admit though, as I get older recovery does appear to be less and I have had to get used to a reduced ability to function.
