Popular singers whose voice just grates

There are a few very successful singers that I really cannot stand to hear their voices. The sound just grates horribly. I wondered if anyone else has sensory problems with singers who appeal to many people.

My top aural horrors are: Janis Joplin, Rod Stewart, Liam Gallagher and Morrissey.

Billy Corgan was the voice I could never stand. Some Smashing Pumpkins music appealed to me in the 90's (I certainly preferred them to Nirvana) but I really struggled to get past his voice. It bothers me less these days. Rod Stewart's voice I hate too but I also think his music is crap so that one doesn't matter so much. Oh, and Eddie Vedder - horrible voice (or style of singing).

I know the smashing punk ins aren’t techinicky grunge but let’s ignore that for now hit isnt fringe all about being a “bad”singer?

It doesn't have anything to do with being a bad or good singer. Plenty of bands I like had singers who you wouldn't call, technically, a good singer. It's just the tone of Billy Corgan's voice that I found irritating.

Many people would call Mariah Carey an objectively "good" singer but I have no interest in all the vocal gymnastics and high pitched squeaking she does that others rave about. It's just irritating to listen to.
