Special Interests - they’re just interests

Probably gonna annoy a few people with this but I’m just irritated with reading the term “special” interests. They’re just interests. Why is there the need to have the word special? Not once have I ever referred to my interests as “special” They’re just my interests. By referring to interests as special, just seems like there’s this need to feel, well, special.

  • Special interests means highly focused and intensive interests, although they can just be referred to as intensive/dedicated interests.

A non autistic person with an interest in cats may keep a cat as a pet, enjoy interacting and playing with cats, and have pictures of cats on their wall or as a screensaver.

An autistic person with an interest in cats will do all that, plus they will be able to identify most breeds of cat, will know a lot about their psychology & behaviour, and possibly have knowledge about cat breeding and genetics (such as most ginger cats are male, tortoiseshell ones female, and that inherited deafness is common in white cats, particularly those with blue eyes)

  • Erm … does this mean Taylor swift may very well be one of us? She can litterly name every breed of cat and has I think 3 cats her favourite of which seems to be Meredith
