Coloured lenses could help you cope

Hi everyone.

Wanted to share this.

I'm only recently diagnoised alothough, I have struggled with the symptoms my whole life. I'm 32 now and was only diagnosed because I had a serious meltdown at work (Armed Forces). As I've got older I have had increasing difficulty with coping. Light and noise sensitivity being the worse.

I've researched this and found that there is a growing body of evidence to suggest people with Autism/ASD have similar neurological formation as those with Dyslexia. A study has shown that people with ASD can benefit from wearing tinted lenses. i have spoken with an optician about this and the term is Visual Stress. Any optician can administrated the test (Colourimetry)which selects the correct tint, shade, refraction etc of lense you need. I now wear green lenses and they have really helped my light sensitivity.

  • I have green lenses and have done for years. It makes a difference especially when reading a book or using technology. I usually use equipment in dark mode as well

  • Hi. Thank you so much for sharing. Is like to get some of these wrap around glasses. Where can I get them please? I’m wearing green glasses now to help manage my migraine. So super dark green wrap around May sounds like heaven. I’m also sitting here with wax ear plugs and noise cancelling headphones over the top. It all helps. As does the strong painkillers I was given in A&E for my third severe migraine of the day.

I have noticed my migraines are triggered by my emotions. I has a bad meltdown a couple of weeks ago and my migraines are now so much more intense and frequent.

i will see my neurologist today. Perhaps I need an autism informed neurologist or pain specialist.

I am 44. Diagnosed autism 2 weeks ago. Been using green lenses to help with migraine for 3 months.

  • Hi Zel,

My son has already had the test and wears a very dark prescription for general College work, however, due to his stress migraines he also has to wear wrap around glasses as well, to help with the light sensitivity during these episodes. They have side shades to limit peripheral light. These are invaluable, but sadly for him, they haven't eliminated his migraines.
