Light sensitivity

Hi all,

I work in a nursery where the rooms are lit by 9 very bright hospital type lights. I can handle them for a certain length of time but they really bother me especially on a bad day. I spoke to my manager about possibly changing the bulbs to less brightness or using lamps, both were a no.

She suggested trying to find out if there was anything which can be done to help on my glasses.

I'm reluctant to spend more money tbh, but with no other option....

Does anyone know if there is something out there that isn't sun glasses, because I don't think she'll want me wearing them at work?

  • If you already wear glasses you can have the lenses tinted (not as dark as sun glasses) but I can see why you'd be reluctant to pay for that and I'd question whether you should have to.

I assume they know about your diagnosis?

I wonder why they had issue with changing the bulbs. And what would they do if a neuro divergent child attended the nursery and was bothered by the lights?

Are you in a union? I wonder whether you could reach out to them and ask advice about whether this is something you should have to pay for or whether your employer should be sorting it as a reasonable adjustment.

  • They know yeah, the whole meeting was about what my triggers are and how to support. Pretty draining!

Apparently it's too hard to go through maintenence to do this. Right?! We have had and we switched them off on hot days but got told we have to have them on. I've asked for lamps offered to do the risk assessment and got nowhere.

I'm not, but I could always shoot a message to HR, see what they say.
