School Refusing

Theres a good article on this in today's Guardian.

Were you a school refuser? I was surprise surprise.

Parents
  • Not quite a refuser, but I cried each day at the school gates every time I was left during the first few weeks at my first school. Then every year thereafter I would have severe migraines in the days running up to the new school year. Even rushed to hospital one year after a week long migraine. Once over the initial shock each year, I would settle in as I loved learning new things. Unfortunately this made me stand out as unusual at the Secondary Modern, resulting in quite a bit of bullying.

  • I remember in my second year at primary scool having to be dragged inside by my Mum as I was crying and screaming so much I really didn't want to go, I never wanted to go to school in the first place and I thought the two terms in reception class was all I had to do. The enormity of having to spend years and years of comin gto this place was awful.

By secondary school, I just started not going, it was a long time before anyone noticed. I was just bad for not going, being bullied I was told to just stay away from them, nobody cared. I was being terrorised at home and at school, I just needed a safe place to be and wandering the streets was better.
