How do your speical interests help you

So how do each of your speical interests benefit you other than just relax ist ion

trains help me with congnitive function as it’s remembering things also the sounds and timetables help wirh the patterns I crave same wirh buses

The circus stops me becoming depressed an issue I have suffered with for too long

music helps me deregulate

taylor swift let’s me relax in a fro state and give me a huge way to do vocal stim a and an gives me a joyful outlet and if I’m feeling down it never fails to make me happy

for 2 years(when I first got inro Taylor) I tried to not admit it(becuase I was masking in a very bad way) but since I’ve been more open about it ive realised over this time it’s been a speical interest as I watched hundreds of hours of tour videos and yt swiftie vids and this was last year before I would open admit to liking her music(I know it’s stupid but before you kknow  autistic you don’t realise how much you’ve been condtioned a certain way so you unintentionally mask on auto pilot)

So even though it feels like a new speical interest it kind of predates my circus one haha which is a big one for me I have list of favoured acts clowns tents even down to who has the best music and why haha

laurel and hardy(and comedy in gerneral speical comedies duos) are good for echolalia outlets and also stop depression too

  • Yeah it's a great feeling. Thank goodness we have these outlets.

When a Taylor Swift song came on at work, yesterday I thought of your post here about being a fan, it made me smile

Apple pie factories, That's started me thinking about the large ones you can get from supermarkets. Yummy Yum

  • My special interests support me in many ways beyond relaxation. Trains and buses strengthen my memory, pattern recognition, and cognitive function through timetables and sounds. The circus helps protect my mental health by keeping depression at bay, while comedy duos like Laurel and Hardy give me joyful echolalia outlets. Music, especially Taylor Swift, helps me regulate emotions, stim vocally, and feel genuine happiness. Even though I masked my love for her at first, embracing it openly has been freeing. Altogether, my interests give me structure, joy, and emotional balance in daily life.

Do you want me to make this sound more personal and casual (like your original tone) or more polished (like something you’d share in a formal setting)?

  • Oh I had that last night watching Taylor swift miss Americana i had no thoughts for the first time in years apart from wow she’s such an inspiration no random thoughts abour work or about apple pie factory’s or what ever just focused on Taylor swift Smiley

  • My special interests help me stay focused and motivated. They give me something positive to look forward to every day. I learn new skills, meet people with similar passions, and find comfort during stressful times. They truly shape my confidence.

  • I think you might have started this thread.

I wanted to send my reply to you.

Sorry I'm just getting used to how this works.

    I'm not the best.

This is the only place I have any online contact.

    1. Please be patient with me everyone.
  • I like art, sketching animals. I only copy them from pictures, but I seem to have a knack for copying detail. I've only just got back into it since school, 40 years ago.

It's the only time I get no thoughts!!

I think they call it flow state!!

  • My special interests really help me stay balanced. Music is a big one I can lose myself in it when things feel too heavy, and it always calms me down. I also enjoy puzzles because they give me focus and a clear sense of achievement. Even a short walk outdoors helps, noticing little details in nature makes me feel more grounded.

  • Watching anime is my biggest special interest. It helps me understand the world better while also teaching me fun things (like in Dr. Stone, it teaches science).

The exaggerated expressions help me understand what is going on.

When I watch anime, I need not worry or use my brain at all (which is a big problem that is fixed since I am thinking 24/365) since it's all explained so easily and visually

  • Reading helps me imagine what it could be like to be someone else, and I often learn new information too.

Playing video games engages my problem solving skills and can give a sense of achievement.

  • I read history, music, biographies pre 2000s tech and transport for my non fiction musican and tv are big ones though

for ik  fiction it’s westerns, sci fi,Tracey beaker and David Williams snd more tbh

  • For me, my non fiction reading tends to be history, usually mediaeval, but often older stuff, pre-history and ancient cultures.

  • Before I was diagnosied I’d often hide them as society makes you feel nkt normal etc but how I embrace it

i prefer my autistic speical interests to any of my way too many adhd hyoerfixations ive had as my speical interests to are life long and hyper fixations come and go so speical interests offer endless joy hehe

  • I spent an hour last night learning more about Taylor swift snd making brief notes like one or two word notes that remind me of whole stories, songs, eras,Easter eggs and in jokes

one I didn’t know is yes whale it’s where Taylor recorded a whale and as it comes out the water she shouts YES WHALE

  • That’s really cool how you can tie each special interest to something that actively supports your mental health. I think a lot of people don’t realize how much structure and stability they can give us

  • Books help me find happy places, I learn loads, they're an escape from the world, if I start to feel wobbly I can go to a book and get into that world, sometimes I have particular characters who I want to spend time with

Me, too. I read a lot (compared to the average punter, anyway). I read about an equal mix of fiction and non-fiction.

I get that the same sense of comfort from reading fictional series and revisiting familiar characters, but I read more one-off novels than series.

I think my true, life-long special interest is "learning how things work", so my non-fiction tastes are very eclectic. They tend towards the science-y end of things, but lots of history, politics, economics, medicine, biographies, art, minority voices, etc.

When I was struggling with depression last year, my reading rate went way up. It really helped to distract me from the tornado of thoughts going around in my brain. It helped to give me some focus and some calm. It helped me to hang on.

After a lifetime of "learning stuff", it often helps me to connect with people once we get past the awkward small talk. If they have a passion, I'll probably know something about it and be able to engage with them.

  • I learned to focus most of the energies of a special interest to be able to become a research specialist of a kind.

For many companies I worked for, I would be given a task to find out about a technology or subject, present a management report on it and if necessary become a subject expert in the field.

Whatever tech they were considering or even other random stuff (finding out about obscure music artists and how to meet them, how to get a replacement phone delivered to the boss on his yacht near the Cook Islands etc) then I had to dig deep to find what info there was, find contacts and interrogate them for more info and options then devise plans to be able to give a workable solution.

It could take days of searching ,reading, compiling reports and cross referencing others experiences to give a decent research paper on the subject.

The energy of the special interest and ability to hold all that info in my head while working on it was a massive help.

More recently I have used it to let me retire in my 50s and find a hobby that stil pays well and keeps me fit (renovating old apartments) but lets me have a good 6 months of time off a year.

Special interests can be awesome when you can harness them.

  • Books help me find happy places, I learn loads, they're an escape from the world, if I start to feel wobbly I can go to a book and get into that world, sometimes I have particular characters who I want to spend time with, I think it's why I prefer series to standalones.

Cooking is one of my few creative outlets, although I get fed up with the lack of stuff available here, my cooking has become a lot more 101 things to do with stuff from tesco fruit and veg and ingredient ailes.

Walking allows my mind to roam free, as does gardening, only I'm constrained by budget and what will grow here.
