Understanding the Role of the Moderation Team

Dear Online Community users,

We’d like to take a moment to share a little more about the role of our moderation team and how we work to maintain a safe, respectful, and welcoming space for all.

Thanks to your thoughtful input, we’ve previously updated our Community Rules to make them clearer and more relevant. Our moderators are here to help ensure that the community rules are followed so it remains a safe and supportive space for you all to share your experiences. We do this by reviewing posts in line with our Community Rules, which are designed to encourage open, honest, and diverse conversations while protecting the wellbeing of our members.

We understand that our community is made up of adults with a wide range of communication styles and lived experiences. We try to intervene only when it is really necessary, for example when conversations become distressing or potentially harmful.  Sometimes, moderation happens quietly and you may not be aware of actions being taken as these are not made public. In many cases, moderators may reach out privately to support members while respecting their privacy and personal information.

We know that the right approach to moderation looks different to different people, some may feel we intervene too quickly and others feel we do not intervene enough. We always strive to apply the rules fairly, consistently, and with consideration for our individual community members. We are a small but dedicated team of volunteer moderators, and we welcome all feedback. We are happy to review any of our actions or decisions.

Lastly, we want to let you know that we’ve made some changes to our moderation approach to ensure we’re meeting the requirements of the Online Safety Act. These updates are designed to enhance user safety and ensure we’re fulfilling our legal responsibilities, while continuing to support open and respectful dialogue. We’ll share more details about these changes soon.

If you have suggestions or concerns, including feedback on decisions we’ve made, please don’t hesitate to contact us at CommunityManager@nas.org.uk.

Thank you for being part of the Online Community and for helping us make it a supportive space for all.

  • The moderation job is a tough one that can be very nuanced, especially when they have to deal with people who may be very sensitive or have a different way of thinkingto others.

Quite often there is no way to resolve a situation that will make all parties involved happy but that is prettly much a reflection of life. Those in a peacekeeping position often get stuck in the middle of conflicts and can wonder "what did I do to deserve this".

The one thing we all need to remeber is that this is not a democracy. It is their site, their rules and we all signed up to agree for them to manage it as they see fit.

I think they are doing a good job and deserve recognition for it.
