looking for greener pastures

Anyone know anything about North Wales?  The land, communities, sizes of towns and cities, culture and livability?  The south has long since become unpleasant and difficult to be in anymore.

Also other areas in mountain regions, rural and green spaces.  Fishing for ideas and inspiration at present.  In the future I intend to live away from densely populated areas especially as life for autistic people is rapidly becoming more difficult and untenable.  Today was horrible and made me think about how unhappy I am, how incomplete my life and sense of being are and how much better I feel surrounded by woodland with nothing but the sound of birds and leaves rustling.

  • I spent a few years living on the English/North Wales border many years ago, and while I am out of touch with housing costs and viability for making a permanent home there, I can tell you that there are some beautiful towns and pleasant countryside around Lllangollen. In North Wales especially, Welsh is the first language for many people, so if you did move to the countryside there, you might find fitting in more of a challenge than you do so already, as it is likely you would need to engage with people at some stages of your life.

  • I'm not moving for a long time yet.  I'm just gathering ideas for my future plans when the time comes.

  • Mercury, are you buying or renting?

Dartmoor's is pretty cold and wet too.

  • That is also my wish and looking for that place, I don't care about amenities as I can always cycle a few miles or order online. I found this area in Suffolk that I thought it was paradise, unfortunately there aren't many properties available or too expensive for me. Yorkshire and Northumberland are cold in winter, in Wales it rains a lot, so I thought the south, mayve Cornwall or Dartmoor. I've been thinking of moving abroad, like Croatia for example as weather in this country is not that great for my health.

Just you writing that has given me a nice calm feeling. Thank you.

  • I live on Anglesey in North Wales, it has got more touristy since covid, but it would seem that many second home owners are selling up because of the taxes on second homes and the 20mph speed limit in built up areas. Eyri (Snowdonia) national park and it's surrounding villages are touristy and full of AirB&B's.

It's all still beautiful, compared to the cities houses are fairly cheap away from the coast. If you look on Anglesey just steer clear of Llanerch-y-meth, the place pebbledash goes to die.

Ceredigion could be an option for you as could anywhere north of Carmarthen, it boarders Ceredigion, so you've got an area from Carmarthen to Aberywyth, north to south. If you aim to look around Lampeter you should find plenty of places to suit you. I know the area quite well as I went to uni there.

But be aware you will need to drive as public transport is sporadic, poor and often non existant. Conectivity for phones and internet often isn't good. Do you reseach and come down in winter to see if you can cope, winter in the countryside can be pretty miserable, weeks of pouring rain, hill's, mountain's and forests blocking the light and mud everywhere.

  • I’ve recently bought a house in Cornwall, it’s going to be my permanent home when building work is finished. It’s basically me doing all the work, as on a tiny budget.

I’m about 7 miles inland and surrounded by countryside, there are fishing lakes about 2 miles away. The house prices are a lot cheaper than where I’m from, the people are very friendly and helpful, I tend to stay away from the seaside towns in the summer as obviously very busy with tourists, I do appreciate that they are vital for the local economy. There are miles of countryside to just roam in and not have to engage with people if that’s how I’m feeling. I definitely notice my anxiety is less. I wish I had done it 20 years ago. I was thinking of living in Italy but as I age I’m also thinking about healthcare.

  • Rather, save enough to be able to leave the UK, and go elsewhere that is most satisfactory.

  • Perhaps I should aim higher, save money, develop skills and knowledge to be more useful and look to places that haven't yet gone to hell.
