finally got a date for assessment

after over 3 years i have a date for my assessment in 4 weeks time.  relief and so worried at the same time.  what if i cant explain well enough for them to understand, will i forget what to say,  i mostly communicate via writing so will that be enough.  minds on overdrive now.  also says clinical interview in acia, is that the same as ados cant see much about it online.  asessment is with a senior pychologist and an assistant psychologist.  should i write anything down to take that will take the pressure off a bit.  any help would be appreciated, thanks

  • I would expect them to send you some forms to complete in addition to just giving you a date. Perhaps the first date is just to kick off the process.

If there is a contact email address or phone number you could ask them, if there is no more info in a few days.

They are supposed to have 2 people see you, so it is not just one person's view.

They mostly just ask some questions and let you talk. They steer the conversation if you go off topic too much. I could provide information ️in writing in addition to their forms. They then ask for clarification if they need more.

You can guess what they will ask about, it will be autism traits. Such as communication issues, social problems, interactions with other people now but particularly in the past, sensory issues, emotional problems, if you have depression, overload, shutdowns, what stimming you do, what work you do, how school or college went, if you have lost any jobs, maybe some general questions about your life.

It is worth thinking about these a bit.

They may also ask why you want a diagnosis.

  • thanks, i already filled in forms some time ago, appointment letter says its for the actual clinical interview , which makes it sound scary.  maybe i should write stuff down to take because my mind will probably go blank.

  • If you already did the forms these should have contained the main points. They will ask for any extra info. The appointment is structured, it is not a therapy session. They will ask about the things they want to know about.

You can think about anything you did not cover in the forms that you especially want them to know and would be worried if you never told them. Write it down so you can make sure you cover it, then it takes away the pressure to try to remember it.

Note that the time is limited so if you write 20 pages you aren't going to get through it.

If they ask for examples of things, you only need 1 or 2, not 10.

Don't worry too much. They know what they are looking for, you just need to be you.
