I've been diagnosed with both ASD and ADHD and it seems that as I get older I'm finding both of them to be more of a challenge.
Two particular issues I have are non-verbal communication (I know all autistic people have this but I appear to have no ability to 'read' people whatsoever) and being unable to identify certain people and objects.
The latter has become a particular problem. Last weekend I needed a hire car and drove it for around four hours before parking it up for another five or so. When I returned to it the car had gone (or so I thought). I assumed it had been stolen or towed away and it took me an hour and a half to recognise it (it didn't help that I panicked, rang the police, rang the car pound and this all happened in Spain - I don't speak Spanish).
Having reflected on it, my car was a Citroen and when I looked at it my brain only registered the size, shape and position of the logo before leaping ahead and convincing me that the car was actually a Mercedes. I was only when sat in a taxi driving past the other side of the car that I vaguely recognised the wheels. I pointed the key at it, pressed 'unlock' and it was my car - exactly where I had left it.
Does anyone else have problems like this? I've realised that I need to slow down and be more careful and methodical when I try to identify things. Either that or I'm actually going a bit bonkers.
