Newly diagnosed working adult, father: what should I read?

Hello. I’m newly diagnosed as autistic. I’m in my late 30s, work full-time in a professional role and I’m the main carer to my two children under 5 (my wife commutes a long way for work so is out of the house for long hours) - giving the background as particularly interesting to read about being an autistic parent and working in a high-powered job (not saying this to boast but just to give some background) while autistic.

  • Congratulations on your diagnosis and welcome to the community!

    For starters, I’d suggest reading:

NAS - After diagnosis - a series of articles that you might find helpful.

Self-Care for Autistic People: 100+ Ways to Recharge, De-Stress, and Unmask! - the first book I bought after my own diagnosis,

Therapy (or counselling) is often recommended after a diagnosis for your GP to arrange. In anticipation of that, you might find it helpful to read this book, which discusses various types of therapy and counselling, together with advice on choosing the right therapist or counsellor - all from an autistic person's viewpoint. Several of us here have found it very helpful:

The Autistic Survival Guide to Therapy

Along with posting here, you might also find it helpful to check out Autistic Parents UK, whose resources include peer support via both Facebook and Discord, facilitated groups, and one-on-one support:

"Autistic Parents UK CIO was founded in 2020 by Autistic parents seeking connection and support, born from a deep understanding of the unique challenges Autistic individuals face while navigating parenthood. We are the only national, Autistic-led charity offering essential support services, resources, education and a thriving community for Autistic parents."

Finally, you could also consider seeking emotional support from other parents via the NAS's parent-to-parent helpline. You can request a call here:
