Yesterday I watched the film "3000 years of longing" starring Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba.
During a trip to Istanbul, a narratology scholar purchases an antique bottle and unleashes a djinn trapped inside it. Of course, he tells her she must make three wishes - but it must be her heart's desire and she cannot wish for more wishes, immortality or an end to sin or suffering. She asks how he got put into the bottle and he tells her it has happened 3 times - then tells her stories of how it happened. The first story is set in the court of the Queen of Sheba, the second in the palace of Suleiman the magnificent, and the third features the wife of a Turkish merchant in the 19th century.
It takes her a while to work out what to wish for. I won't say what her wishes are, in case people want to watch the movie (it's available on C4 catchup)
