I feel sad today

This will pass, and I'm going to let it pass in it's own time. How is everyone feeling today?

  • I feel down this morning. Mornings always feel hardest I feel scared but have no reason to feel that way it’s just there when I wake up. Yes probably best not to dwell too much but let bad feelings pass on. It helps me to feel connected here, I’m sending happy thoughts to you and hope your sadness lifts soon.

  • Thank you. I think it's due to a disagreement with a client and friend in our session last night. We didn't fall out, but it was a little jarring and I said I'd have to agree to disagree. She believes everything happens for a reason as it helps her to justify all the problems she's had in her life. I prefer to think everything happens by chance or by us actually making it happen if we can. I believe we're on a path that happens as a result of lots of small or big decisions we make in life, or ones that are made for us, good or bad, and that is the path we take as a result.

I found it jarring because my partner has been through a lot of trauma since her mother died when she was 14, and she's now a mother to an autistic 12yr old who has a lot of challenging needs, so 50% of mornings are a stressful battle, during which time he can be very cruel to her. She didn't ask for that, and saying all that was meant to happen to her was very hard to hear from a friend.

If that belief is comforting her then fair enough, but to put it on someone else is wrong in my opinion. Traumatic events may makes us a little more resilient, but they also cause CPTSD and require sometimes years of therapy and cost, affecting our future relationships, friendships and happiness. Nobody would ask for or be grateful for that. It made me angry and sad that my friend couldn't see that, especially as she also has CPTSD from her upbringing.

  • Things also happen because of decisions other people make that you have no control over, in addition to random chance.

Even if you do everything right, pick the best options, things can still go wrong.

If people find it helpful to believe it has a purpose and it is the will of the gods, then it does no harm. Indeed it is probably good as it stops rumination, blame and guilt over events you had no control over.
