My film of the week - Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker (Spoilers)

I watched the last film of the Star Wars sequel yesterday. Great acting & kept my interest up until the end, but I was disappointed with the ending.

All along I had been thinking that Rey was somehow a Skywalker - the unknown love child of Luke, or the hidden twin of Ben Solo, perhaps? But no. Ok then,so she's been attracted to Ben all along, so they defeat the forces of evil together, get married, take the double barrelled surname Skywalker-Solo and start the Skywalker school of Jedi in honour of Luke & Leia? No again. She's not a Skywalker, by birth or marriage, but she still takes their name! I prefer my ending.

  • I want to say this with all due respect, because if you enjoyed it then that's absolutely great and nothing can change that. I remember watching this when it was released and felt so excited because it was the first Star Wars film I took my children to - and I felt so disappointed in it. There are many reasons why I consider this the worst of all the films...

I couldn't follow the plot (and I watch a lot of sci-fi, so can follow a lot of things) - searching for a thing, which leads to another thing, then another, all for "reasons". And standing at a particular spot on a cliff to locate something does not seem logical.

It was such a shame that Carrie Fisher died and couldn't complete it. I think what they did though by re-editing old footage of her was the worst of both worlds, as impressive as it looked technically it was so obvious that the other characters were acting around her, she clearly wasn't present in the scenes. And a character I liked from The Last Jedi, the actress who got all the hate online, they just sidelined her, making her stay back at the base for no reason at all to do nothing.

Speaking of The Last Jedi, I actually loved that one and this to me felt like it wanted to undo everything from it. Rey could have been a "nobody" and still feel like she was special. Instead, they have to have a "I am your father" twist which didn't feel earned at all. I actually groaned out loud in the cinema when I heard who Rey actually was. And Finn suddenly feels the Force? And wants to tell Rey all through the film but never actually does? And the Emperor is somehow back and shoehorned into the plot, despite building up a perfectly fine and interesting bad guy already  (Kylo Ren)

Finally, there could have been some really poignant moments which they reversed on immediately. Chewbacca being on the exploded ship? Wrong, he was on another one, it's OK! C3PO sounding like he's going to sacrifice himself for the greater cause? Don't worry, he just resets and then it becomes funny!

I'm sorry Lotus, these are purely my own thoughts so don't take them to heart. I will agree with you on one thing though, the acting and dialogue in the latest trilogy can be a lot better than the originals and definitely the prequels. When I hear these characters talk, it does actually sound and feel more natural, Attack of the Clones actually had the worst sounding dialogue in any of the films. I hope I got my opinions across OK without sounding completely judgemental.
