Autism, Anxiety and Exposure Therapy/CBT

Hello all,

So I have been in and out of therapy for a few years for low mood/anxiety particularly focusing on social anxiety. Normally we use CBT and do a lot of exposures and dropping of safety behaviours. I find the exposures hard and I am tired after doing them but I do tend to feel a bit better and accomplished. I tend to get in a cycle of doing more and more but then becoming burnt out and my skills regressing again. I now have a official autism diagnosis (and am on the wait list for ADHD assessment).

Really what I want to ask is does anyone find that CBT and exposure is good and helpful for them or is there any methods that work better/more effectively?

Thank you all for your help in advance!

  • Doesn't the fact you are able to do more indicate it works.

The problem seems to be not pushing too hard and doing too much, which then kills the positive reinforcement if you get burnt out.

Knowing where to draw the line seems to be the issue.

Is it possible to take things more slowly or set slightly lower goals so you get something that sticks?
