The US is proposing creating a register of those with autism

If you haven't seen the news, Roberr F Kennedy Jr has proposed that there is setup a register of people with autism in the USA.

He also proposes a bunch of misinformation about autism to justify this (e.g. it is a preventable disease caused by environmental toxins)) -

News these days can be very biassed in its reporting so it helps that Snopes has researched the article in more depth:

My concern is that this is opening the door to eugenics. Look at his statement: "These are kids who will never pay taxes, they’ll never hold a job, they’ll never play baseball, they’ll never write a poem, they’ll never go out on a date, many of them will never use a toilet unassisted,

It does not take much of a stretch of the imagination for a regeime already leaning heavily on facist methodology to start to build registers of the undesirables - those they can get rid of because they are a burdon on society.

Once the US starts to normalise the process then other countries are going to believe thet can do the same - the Pandoras box will have been opened.

It is a very troubling time to be autistic.

  • He is finding their votes and support useful — at the moment.

  • It is ironic that the Fascist regime in the US is targeting anyone and everyone but the Jews.

  • Kind of ironic that everyone thought Hitler was autistic....

Life really doesn't need a new target for discrimination, we were just starting to become better as a whole. I fear America is going to cause some global problems in the time between now and coming to their senses over who they vote for....

Waiting to weed out the weaklings.
Waiting to smash in their windows
    And kick in their doors.
    Waiting for the final solution
    To strengthen the strain.
    Waiting to follow the worms.
Waiting to turn on the showers
    And fire the ovens.
Waiting for the queens and the coons
and the reds and the Jews.
    Waiting to follow the worms."

  • It will be interesting if/when there are genes for autism found, one would be able to compare them to ancient DNA samples and most likely find that they've been there all along.

I do think Kennedy has a point about all the environmental toxins, but his ideas about autism are wrong. We do live in a heavily poluted world, micro plastics have been found in the fluid in human eggs, there are micro-plastics everywhere in the world, even in places like antartica. We've known about the dangers of plastic for decades, about what we actually do with the stuff when we've finished using it, throwing it away and burying it seems to have been the solution for was too long. I'm amazed that it took a David Attenborough documentary showing how poluted with plastic our oceans are before a lot of people actually took any notice.

  • This is horrific, truly horrifying to hear.

I'm glad my mom and I left America when we did.

  • I agree with you. If the Mail on Sunday hasn’t exaggerated reports and Musk intends to do this, it would be in the list of the top most disturbing actions by a high profile person in the politics/business. Intelligence does not equate with prudence and reasonableness.

  • Going off topic, but the idea of Musk wanting to sire so many children fills me with revulsion, the ethics of it which borders on a cult.

What I've realised recently though which comforts me is that he may "father" many children, but he'll never be a good "parent" to them because he ignores them. What he doesn't understand is that his genetics are not enough to make intelligent children (assuming he is intelligent himself, which I think he overestimates greatly). He needs to nurture them, but he isn't interested in that. All that will happen is he creates a bizarrely huge "family" that has no connection to him - somehow I doubt they will inherit anything from him in terms of financial wealth.

  • It is horrific, hopefully the Trump administration won't achieve its aims. I imagine there will be opposition, as Americans have constitutional rights.

Trump of course has ambitions to 'look at' the constitution, but in this he will be vehemently opposed.

    It's very concerning though.

  • labour-based 'wellness farms' institutions in which those deemed to be suffering from 'mental illness' will be involuntarily incarcerated under the guise of care.

That's horrific and reminiscent of China's camps Disappointed relieved

  • I have read that RFK Jr. Is planning a programme of labour-based 'wellness farms' institutions in which those deemed to be suffering from 'mental illness' will be involuntarily incarcerated under the guise of care.

His comments on autism and plans for a register make sense in this context.

    It's extremely concerning.

  • I'm a bit of a news hound and enjoy politics on the whole, but I'm finding it harder now with the news cycle being dominated by Trump, but I think this is exactly what he wants, he dosen't care how true or real the news is as long as he's top of the agenda.

There are lot's of things we can't change, but theres lots of things we can play our part in, such as all the ordinary people who are changing travel plans and won't go to America, who seek out non American goods and won't buy American branded goods. "The people" are way ahead of govenments again and voting with their wallets, just like people were and are about environmental issues, like recycling and waste.

Am I the only one struck by the irony of Musk wanting to create a trible of super intelligent mini-me's, who chances are will be autistic too and end up on Kennedy's list? I think the whole thing will collapse under the weight of its own absurdity before to long.

Is Must the only person to have been radicalised by his own social media platform?

  • Yes. We ‘consume’ media and news in a similar way to the way we consume food - it’s a daily ‘diet’ for many people and a lot of it is toxic to our mental health and sense of peace and hope - and if your diet is bad you often feel bad.

  • Robert F Kennedy Jnr tells lies so that he has a false pretext for his planned autism register. I am delighted that reputable scientists are condemning this and remain hopeful that the backlash will prevent any of his ridiculous ideas becoming reality.

For some Republican voters, Eugenics is exactly what they seek to do to make the ‘US’ as productive and prosperous as possible through elimination of the poor, disabled and vulnerable. Musk, according to today’s Mail on Sunday, seeks to ‘father 5000 mini Musks’. It claims that Musk wants to seed the world with mini Musks of high intelligence. The idea being that the white superior brain of a genius will ‘make America great again’. Some voters are concerned that the population isn’t growing quickly enough to provide enough working age adults to keep the economy ticking over. The Mail on Sunday is a newspaper that people read because they like sensationalist articles that might not always reflect the truth, so it is welcome to Musk.

The world economy is being wrecked and according to US newspapers, the majority of Republican voters are saying they are going to weather out the storm, even though some of them are financially poorer due to Trump’s policies. The poll in yesterday’s Washington Post gives an indication of sentiments.

I am interested in the world, but I’m practicing the art of detachment from things that might not happen or things I can’t control.

  • I agree, and this is why I don't pay attention to the news anymore. Since the Covid times, I found I was just lost in misery and contractions, worrying about what is the right opinion I should have that aligns with the rest of the world. But it's too big to worry about, especially other countries problems (which may one day encroach on our lives, but we have no power as individuals to stop it).

Occasionally I will read about what the US is doing, but usually to see if their current so-called policies backfires dramatically to show they have no idea what they are doing. For the US in particular, I have actually stopped thinking of them as a traditional "superpower" country and have far less respect for them as a nation now - given they have the word "united" in their name, they seem to be a hugely divided nation.

  • My policy these days is to limit the amount I worry and get stressed about things by primarily concerning myself with things that are happening now, rather than with things that MIGHT happen. I try not to dwell on the past either for similar reasons (the past is gone so why add to our unhappiness by dwelling on it). To keep reasonably good mental health I try to not look ahead too much. Obviously Trump being in power in the U.S is going to involve some very bad things - but I can’t do anything about that and it’s in a foreign country so right now I’m not going to worry about it. I have no power to change it. If it happens  I’ll deal with it when it does, but it might never happen anyway.

  • I'm not so sure Iain, I think there's a general outcry against people like Kenedy, many scientists are leaving the US to work elsewhere where they can continue thier research, some universities in Europe are actively recruiting American academics.

I agree it's worrying generally, but I think America is isolating itself from the rest of the world, or maybe the rest of the world is isolating America, there does seem to be a slump in Trumps base support, now people are being hit by the economic uncertainties caused by tarrifs and stuff. The courts are overturning many of Trumps policies and diktats.

Eugenics has always been a bit of a dirty secret in America, they practiced it long after everyone else stopped, so I'm not sure it ever really went away.
