Protecting siblings and myself

Hi all,

I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions. I am a single parent to a 9-year-old (nearly 10) autistic son and his 5-year-old sister. Today he was very dysregulated. He has a calm down area with toys/blankets e.t.c. but wouldn't go there and I could tell his sister was going to get hurt. I tried to get her out of the room but couldn't in time so put myself in between wne he bit me hard and it bruised instantly. As he is getting bigger, I am genuinely worried he is going to hurt one of us during his meltdowns. I've been to the doctor's, school and I'm on the waiting list for private therapy, but not got a place yet and no-one seems willing to help. The other day he said he wanted to stab me. Any advice at all?

  • Hi Jem,

I don't really have much help to offer you. I just felt I wanted reach out, I am in a situation almost identical to yours 10yr old ND and 5yr sibling, with similar sounding disregulations, the violence is so hard to manage and then the remorse  that you know is coming, but in that moment there is no getting through. The one thing I haven't seen mentioned is a CAHMS referral but again I'm not sure what they would be able to advise for these moments. You could also consider an Early help referral, the school should be able to help with this and they ,maybe able to signpost you to more resources.
