Trialling a new anti-spam system

We wanted to let you know that we’re making some changes to the way we detect and remove spam on the Online Community.

Our technical team has recently carried out an in-depth analysis of our current spam filtering system and identified the reasons why genuine posts were being incorrectly flagged as spam. We're now ready to trial a new system which we hope will improve things. That trial will begin on the morning of Tuesday 29th April.

We know how important it is that the Online Community remains a safe and welcoming space. You, our fantastic members, play a huge role in this by flagging content that might be spam, or breaks the rules, or suggests that someone might be struggling. The moderation team is incredibly grateful for your continued support.

As we test the new system, we’d really appreciate your help. Please continue to flag anything you think could be spam, is against the rules, or is concerning in any way. Your input really makes a difference and helps us respond quickly.

Thanks again for being such a supportive and engaged community.

  • Please could the mods give us feedback on this.

Are we now using a different spam filter and is it working ie not seeing long term members as spam etc?

Those of us who were traumatised by the last one might then consider posting again/more.

    Thank you.

  • Hi Debbie

Sorry we haven't given an update on this and thanks for bringing this question to my attention.

The new system has been successful so far. Actual spam posts are being caught and going into moderation. Crucially, we have not seen any genuine posts from Online Community users enter the spam queue for us to approve since the change was made.

The previous spam system was incorrectly flagging considerate and helpful posts as spam over and over. We are delighted that this is no longer happening. We're also so sorry for all the distress and frustration it caused while our technical partners worked out what was wrong and how to fix it.

It's very helpful for all of you to keep flagging anything you think could be spam, is against the rules, or is concerning in any way. This helps us respond quickly.

    Many thanks
