New Film club

Some of you will remember we used to have a member of this community called I Sperg who ran a film night every weekend (via zoom, I believe) but sadly he left.

So I would like to try starting a Film Club. We won't all watch the film at the same time, like I Sperg tried to arrange, but I will post each week to tell everyone what this weekend's film is and you can watch it  at a time to suit you and then post what you thought about it.

Here are the rules of Film Club:

You will not talk about film club ...... No, just joking

One new thread to be started by the club manager (me) each week, advising the film for that weekend

Films will only be chosen from free services - All4, ITVX, Prime free to view

Only the current week's film to be discussed on each week's thread

No shirts, no shoes to be worn while watching films.... Casual clothing only please (yes, I know we can't see you!)

The film for this weekend is Big Trouble in Little China - available on ITVX.

If you want to join in with Film Club, enjoy watching and then post what you thought.

  • I've now watched Big Trouble in Little China - here's my review:

This is a real 80s cult film, and a mashup of action, mystery, fantasy, comedy, martial arts and Chinese black magic. In some ways it feels a bit like a homage to/parody of kung fu movies.

There are good special effects (particularly considering the era it was made), some silly monsters, weird enormous hats that look like ugly lampshades, and the occasional funny lines and absurd situations. There's also a bit of slapstick humour, such as when Jack kisses Gracie and ends up with red lipstick all around his mouth.

The evil sorcerer Chinese Prince needs a woman with green eyes, which is supposed to be rare in China, and his followers kidnap a Chinese woman with green eyes just arrived in America. Obviously this was before Google, but if they had done their research they would have found that there is a village in China called Liqian where two thirds of the population have green eyes and blonde hair!

Not the most polished of movies, but overall a fun ride. I give it 7/10.
