Post diagnostic support - what does this cover and where to find this type of support

Hi

I have recently been diagnosed as being autistic. I am wondering whether it might be helpful for me to book some post diagnostic support sessions. Would be keen to hear what things they cover, what people have found beneficial attending these types of sessions and where I can find this type of support please?

The GP has referred me to Turning Point which isn't exactly helpful as I'm keen to speak to some-one who is qualified to help, not just a generic counsellor / therapist.

Thank you in advance

  • Hey Kayaker,

The only thing I would suggest is finding support that can provide long-term commitment. When I was diagnosed, I was offered four sessions with a psychiatrist; by the third, it grew quickly apparent it was a waste of time. You can't have part-time support for a lifelong condition. Depending on your personal and economic circumstances, if you have the means, seek as I have suggested above, or it gets stressful quickly. Alternatively, do the research yourself and build a life in your image.

As for what you have been offered by your G.P., as far as I am aware, that is the standard generic follow-up support that they are obligated to give you. And once you get to Turning Point, you will find an organisation lacking resources and motivation.

Sadly, it's the way of the world at the moment. Sleepy
