Video interview

I just had to do my first ever video interview. For those who have been fortunate enough to avoid this, this is where a system gives you a question, a slightly intimidating countdown for you to think about it and then records you for a maximum amount of time saying your answer.

It was terrible.

I'm sure some people probably find it easier than I did, and I'm sure the headache isn't helping, but I just found that utterly awful. If anything I prefer in person interviews. Sure they can misinterpret my body language heavily, and I'm not the best with eye contact, but I don't have to see my face when I do it, and I'm much less self conscious about what my voice sounds like. They even offered the opportunity to listen back and re-record! Maybe that would be helpful for some, but as someone that overthinks everything I say anyway, that nearly sent me into a pit of despair.

Am I catastrophising this? Do you actually think video interviews are a great idea? Have you had to deal with them before and can say something comforting like 'you'll get better with practice'?

  • I think it sounds utterly horrific and I wouldn't do it. I can barely cope with Teams meeting with the camera on, I'm too busy worrying and watching how I come across that I don't hear anything that gets said, a bit like when you force eye contact with someone. I prefer in person where you can't see yourself and there's no recording floating about in the cloud somewhere!
