Struggling with Modern technology

All my adult life, I've struggled with Modern Technology and I'm wondering if this is autism related, I was diagnosed as autistic last August and I am currently struggling with adding contacts on my Yahoo mail contacts list via ,mobile phone and I gave up in frustration that I can't work out how to do it.

is it because I'm a 52 year old man and Modern Technology is for the younger generation or is it definitely Autism related?

  • Interesting question. I have always struggled with modern technology too but for a different reason. I know how to use it I just don't see it as a valuable or good thing and I find too much time in front of it is overwhelming and bad for my mental health. I think it's actually bad for most people's mental health but sadly the world in general doesn't seem to see that

I think there may be an element of autism to it. I think too much technology and screen time can be overstimulating for the autistic brain

  • No Billy, I just don't understand it. I also don't understand the attraction so many people seem to have with it, I've looked at other peoples faceache and stuff and I just don't see the attraction, I see annoying distractions and I really don;t see the need to look at pictures of other peoples dinners. Nor do I see the attraction of you tube, I know some people find it useful for finding out how to do thngs, but I don't, I find it confusing, the adverts awful, the music accompanying so many vidios makes me want to kill things, so I don't use it at all, I know that makes me weird and possibly unique here, but thats how it is.

  • Not unique. I can't see the attraction to it either. My friends can't understand why I won't be part of a group selfie when we go out or why I don't take any photos myself. I'm not there for my online profile, I'm there to enjoy time with my friends and to be honest I'm just not interested in telling the world about it. I value my privacy and that includes being 'tagged' in other people's photos too.

  • Yes! I know agree with the shop thing. Not only is online shopping overwhelming for me, I am a massive supporter of the high street and always try to shop local when I can, so when I go to a shop and get told to look online I end up going elsewhere or even not buying what I want in the end. I feel for my daughter who will never experience the joy of shopping with friends, for her it'll be looking through the window of a warehouse and opening a box.

  • I was walking in the forest earlier beatiful day, lots of birds singing and two people walked past us facce down in their phones, I wondered what the point of them being there was, they could of been on a tredmil at home for all the notice they took of their surroundings.

It bugs the hell out of me when go into shops and they haven't got the thing I want and tell me to look online

  • I totally agree with this. We have one child, there will only ever be one, and she's already growing up too fast. I don't want to miss it for the sake of some distant relative's dinner :-D

  • Exactly. People seem more interested in the activities of people they barely know online than in the activities of the people who love them right in front of their face.
I see so many parents sat in coffee shops and parks ignoring their kids while scrolling through their phone. I feel like saying to them, you'll never get that time with your kids back

  • I agree, I feel like people are measuring their self worth with their online 'likes' rather than being in the moment with the people who really care about them.

  • Agreed. I don't want to see photos of other people's meals unless I can eat them. Most people seem to live more in the online world than the real one these days and sadly the online world isn't real. I think that's one of the main reasons the world is the way it is and people are so unhappy
